REVIEWS
"Many middle-school age readers will identify with some of the relationship struggles the main character has. Any reader who has had to navigate leaving friends and family in a move will identify with Matthew’s feelings. The details the author includes about the trip provide a vivid picture of the strenuous life on the trail and allow readers to comprehend the difficult decisions that must be made on the trip. There are also enough “clues” to allow readers to follow the journey on a map if so inclined. Matthew’s Secret has enough excitement to keep a reluctant reader engaged and an avid reader satisfied. A great read for a class studying this period of US history."
